Why kahaani did not work for me
So I was amazed at the kind of mental strength that she has to do a scene, get out of it and go into the next, because it took me three months to do the same. She has evolved tremendously.
A lot of people would club Kahaani 2 into the multiplex, content-driven cinema category as opposed to mainstream Bollywood. Do you agree with those definitions?
Why are we creating , categories? Because the audience is the same. I would love to. But it all depends on the script. When I had a script called Aladin , I did it. It had a lot of song and dance. Aapko lage ki iske liye main jaan de dunga You should feel that you could give up your life for it.
The film comes at a slightly dicey time with the cash crunch just in. Are you worried about those logistics? Our movie was born out of chaos. So Durga has fought a lot of battles, this is her last one. I have faith in her. Never miss a story! Stay connected and informed with Mint. He did send Khan to cover up the case, and when Khan assured that the pregnant lady is harmless he wanted Khan to close the file and return from Kolkata.
When he got the phone call from Vidya he pretended to know nothing and said that she can contact his local office. He then called up Milan and asked him to settle the case. He also was trying to cover up Bajpayee by asking him to come and join since then he would have more control on him and he himself can also have a cleaner image.
Khan is an honest IB officer and he tried hard to find out Milan Damji and failed. He was sure that someone from the intelligence was helping Milan. When Agnes was murdered he found another way to open up the case.
He calmed Bhaskaran saying that the pregnant lady is harmless. He did a background check to see if she is genuine. We should remember that they had a secret wedding. She was actually a software engineer in London and came from there to Kolkata.
He felt that he should use Rana and Vidya pregnant woman se kisiko dar nehin lagta to get hold of Milan. If he went to do the investigations the enemy side will be cautious but for Vidya people will not care much, given the fact that Bhaskaran was being told by Khan that she is harmless. She asked Tyagi and Tyagi told Sridhar.
Sridhar contacted Bob to kill Agnes and go and get the file. He should have appointed a contract killer to kill Milan, get the file from Vidya and kill her. However I am assuming that time was short and given the fact that both Sridhar and Bob are killed, Khan has been aggressive, and Vidya and Police have evidence he took the easier method. After securing the file he must have gotten Milan killed. Ah, another thing. And ultimately…the most predictable thing happens….
It was key to the plot for him to die, just as much as it was convenient. This is a ridiculous discussion. Watch a film , liked it, forget it. If you start looking at any film in the world, you will find out many mistakes. DDLJ :- The last picture which amrish puri sees in the climax of the film ….. How does it matter anyways….. Entertainment is fine sir, but is it a crime to ask for a few authentic things in a story? And is it so difficult for a movie-maker to give it to us?
It only proves that the indian movie-goer is getting smarter. And then take a chill pill. Well, it is a fairly modest leap of suspension of disbelief, but Bhaskaran was both a seasoned Intelligence head and a conspirator for the longest time. So he was merely playing the part of a good double agent.
My point is not infallible, but still a cop-out of an explanation. Moreover, it would have looked rather suspicious if he did the contrary, Khan being genius and all. Tricky one, this. A leap of faith too many on my part, or is it? Weak point, I do acquiesce. I think Bhaskaran trusts the woman to make a deal with Damji to lead the cops astray. She was helping the effing cops, what else do you expect?
There ARE people who place right over might, and will undergo the risk to their life to help the nation implicate and prosecute a defector, right?
And about the building, well, it was a masquerade department; it is MEANT to be laxly guarded and is made to appear like any other official building. I cannot remember any mention of a pre-planned ploy to kill him. Point out to me if i missed it.
I guess it was just that she found a window of opportunity to off him and still make it appear as if it was an act of self defense. Well, she talked of incriminating evidence in a confident manner, stating what Bhaskaran knew to be true. The latter might have been taken by surprise and believed her lock stock and barrel for that reason.
Again, I agree with you for the most of it, but there can again be made a leap of suspending disbelief that Agnes had been piqued by her being denied entry to the files of Damji.
But then getting Bob to fetch the file before and then doing away with her is the logical chronology to be employed. Well, you have me clean bowled on that too. Whatever undercover ops are done by intelligence agencies are also because they have no jurisdiction over local authorities in matters relating to investigations.
IB cannot even make arrests on their own. Answer to Point No. I know MM might not agree but you know this is like the biggest problem of watching thrillers on visual medium. We people who are now seasoned viewers of thrillers right from the days of Byomkesh Bakshi to Castle are easily able to tell the whodunnit even before the police.
But the problem a film maker suffers from is he needs a way to at least introduce all characters to you. And yes I agree MM they could have shown in a better way other than the lame ass way of showing Bhaskaran approaching Bajpai. Without losing your temper I will ask you this. Do you think Bajpai had an iota of shaque on Bhaskaran — Possible right?. The only think I can think of it Bajpai had shaque on bhaskaran and he asked Vidya to to do this as a check.
I am trying to give a logic and hope the writer can at least give his opinions on this rather than just dismissing it. When they — sinha and vidya were running away, sinha tells vidya for the first time that he has khan in on this.
Vidya is obviously surprised as is clearly shown. Now from the premise I have shown in my previous entry it is clear to me that Bajpai had a shaque on bhaskaran and vidya couldnt trust Khan as well because he for all she knew be an accomplice of bhaskaran.
So she had to kill Shridhar so that they can eventually contact bhaskaran and call damji and kill him. Bhaskaran had to send damji and not just any other contract killer because time was of the essence.
Khan was already closing in and Bob had failed. She was playing khan once she knew of his involvement with Rana. It was a split second decision after the revelation that sinha was working for khan. Just a thought guys. Multiple theories eh?
On Answer Point No. So according to Umang — Khan was actually keeping Bhaskaran in the loop. Not sure but interesting point. Actaully Ganguly is a mystery. The records on Damji should have been removed way earlier. I need answer to this for sure. Very Good Point. Why did they even mention that. If they wouldnt I wouldnt have thought about it. For rest of questions I agree with answers given above by various people. BUt I really want to know.
Director definitely suggesting something. MM — I have visited this blog for the first time. Very Interesting work. I had a mystery in mind about why Vidya killed shridhar which is what I googled and your blog was the first and the only entry. Good work. Basic End Thought : If you cant convince them confuse them and confused fellows will come back just like it happened with Usual suspects. Sleeper hit!. I watched this film at the suggestion of an Indian guy.
I have seen so many thrillers and was hopeful for my first Indian thriller. Let me cut to the chase: this movie is pathetic. It uses lack of information and intrigue to try to get you to stay involved with the film…to stay guessing. Either way, this scene is entirely not believable. You have access to all films worldwide and you can see how decent ones hang together eg: Tell No One. You know what they call people who write stories that lack plot integrity? Bad writers. And you know what they call the movies they create from such stories?
Bad movies. If you want alternatives, here is a list of better thrillers. Sorry if this has already been discussed in the numerous posts- but what was the motivation for the gas attack in the first place. Why did they do it? Was it an accident? Was it supposed to be a coincidence that the nosey woman spilled the milk? Was the mother transporting it deliberately or without knowing? Then what would have been the point of it existing there on the train.
Unless the mother had been told to cause the attack, but then got nervous and walked away? Maybe the milk bottle was supposed to self destruct eventually…? Maybe the nosey woman was a derailed secret agent? By the way, I loved the film. I just need to know what was the motivation behind the gas attack as they never explain! You probably took maximum risk with The Dirty Picture. Other than that which movies do you think were demanding? Paa and Ishqiya It was a gamble to play mother to a year-old. There was a risk of being offered the role of mothers following that. Thankfully, it worked. Ishqiya helped me rediscover the actor in me. It made me realise how much I love acting. You took a break for nearly eight months in between. What do you generally do in your free time? I have always worked at this pace. I have done one movie or maximum two in a year.
Kahaani is directed by Sujoy Ghosh Jhankaar Beats. Kahaani is not usual bollywood story where there is a happy ending but actually is out- of-box thought with a complex story. Sujoy Ghosh's direction is applauding. The director might have gone into a wrong path with few duds but he is back with a bang with his brilliant direction.
From the beginning till the end of the movie, you cannot predict what is going to happen next. The duration of the movie is around 2 hours but keeps you engaged till the credit rolls out. The story is superbly told with lots of twist and turns. The screenplay is tight and holds your attention in every frame. Dialogues are well told along with eye-catching cinematography by Setu. The ace cinematographer has portrayed the rich heritage and culture of Kolkata during the Durga puja festival with aplomb.
The streets and lanes of Kolkata including my area where this film was shot has been nicely captured. Performances by the star cast is like an icing on the cake. Vidya Balan is just amazing. She is so natural while playing the character of Vidya Venkatesan bagchi. Not just that she is superb in her dialogues, she emotes expressively through her eyes.
Bengali actor Paramabrata Chatterjee does justice as his supporting role along with brilliant acting done Nawazuddin Siddiqui. I would also like to mention the song "Ekla Cholo Re" beautifully sung by great Amitabh Bachchan Kahaani , on the whole , is a fantastic affair to remember. Highly recommended for its hard hitting direction , nice story, portrayal of beautiful essence of Kolkata but a must see for splendid performance by Vidya Balan.
The film opens with some experiments on rats. Looks like nerve gas. Soon thereafter, there is a mass death on a train when a vial of the stuff is broken in one of the cars.
End segment. He talked to her everyday since he left London, up until about two weeks previous. At the first the police have no idea. The place where he worked claimed he worked says they made no assignments for him, and he did not report to them. The police suggest a body; she does not recognise it. She and the police go to where his uncle lived, but no one will say that they know of him. They get the same sort of response at the school where he did his studies in youth.
The cops investigate the airline records; no one of his name left London nor arrived in Kolkata on the given dates. Vidya reached out to Agnes, who does some digging, but finds locked files. She remembers a man with another name Milan Damji who looked just like Vidya's picture of her husband.
Soon thereafter, Agnes is murdered. A police official Khan who is targeting the company NDC interviews her about her relationship to Agnes. The experiments at the beginning of the film were done at NDC.
Khan and his boss reach out to outlier intelligence personnel to solve the crime of the rail attack. The bad guys attempt to scare Vidya with a visit from the man who assassinated Agnes.
Vidya and Rana continue to investigate her husband's real movements before he disappeared. Will Vidya find out the truth? Is her husband still alive? Will the miscreants be brought to justice? The is mostly a one-woman show, but the one woman is not nearly stellar enough to carry a two hour movie. The long-suffering Parambrata Chatterjee gave a good performance, which almost counterbalanced the rotten work of Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Saswata Chatterjee as the assassin was not very believable either.
The bad guys could have defused this at many junctures with relative ease. A single knife thrust, for instance, and no one would be left who cared enough to keep the investigation going. So, this is PC nonsense with an unconvincing lead. The last five minutes were the worst in that regard. Kahaani is a wonderful, taut thriller which will keep the viewers on the edge of their seat. It is filmed rather professionally, with fantastic cinematography and great sound and score.
The portrayal of Kolkatta may not be the most accurate and of the most positive, but the city is beautifully shot and is efficiently used to present the story. Sujoy Ghosh directs this feature with great mastery - Kahaani is a thrilling movie experience, thanks to his skillful direction and the impressive writing.
The characters are very well presented and characterised, and the suspense is only heightened as the proceedings unfold. The film is of course a good example of a complete package, and this package wouldn't have been complete without the presence of a terrific Vidya Balan. This lady's career seems to be reaching impossible heights as she does not tire of delivering one great performance after the other.
Her brilliantly understated performance here is another astonishing portrait of strength and maturity. She is well supported by several actors, all of whom give credible performances and make the film work. Kahaani is overall a superior piece of storytelling and an altogether worthy effort. Not to be missed. A gripping thriller AvinashPatalay 18 April Sujoy Ghosh weaves a mother of a story with "Kahaani" proving that he is a fine story-teller and "Alladin" was just a glitch.
Not only he reclaims lost ground but strikes back with gusto. The writing and execution is taut giving a edgy thriller feel. Vidya Balan is nearly on the verge of a home run and the success of "Kahaani" is yet another feather in her cap.
Parambrata Chatterjee has written dark horse all over with his subtle and restraint delivery. Saswata Chatterjee leaves an impression as a insurance agent who doubles up as a hit-man though his character is borrowed from a Sidney Sheldon's works.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui creates an impact in a role of a no-nonsense officer. Darshan Jariwala barely has a few minutes in total. The climax attempts to answer the riddles in the style of "The Usual Suspects" meaning warranting a second time watch - and honestly "Kahaani" deserves. A potentially interesting mystery thriller is kinda ruined by a rushed pacing, jarring editing choices and a laughably bad twist ending. I do love the hitman character though. He really deserved way more screentime.
This movie has, in addition to entertaining me for two hours, reminded me of two things. Firstly, my Kolkata days. I had stepped on the Howrah Junction for the first time in my life on I lived in Chittaranjan Avenue, a central place of the city for more than three and a half years and I still miss those days of walking kilometres daily and travelling in buses, local trains, trams and sometimes the metro rail it was in its initial period those days and used to run between some selected places only.
I enjoyed watching movies in poor quality to high quality theatres, eating Jhaal Muri at roadside joints, drinking hot mil and having sweets at the roadside sweet shops, having my lunches and dinners at Maarwaari Baasas Dhaabas in the Bangur Building situated on the Mahatma Gandhi Road in the Burra Baazaar or Bada Baazaar area.
Kahaani enabled me to relive that more than two decades old period. Everything in this world is prone to changes but by watching Kahaani, I felt as if very little has changed in Kolkata except the name because then it was Calcutta.
With the main protagonist of this movie - Vidya Baalan, I wandered through the streets, roads, localities, buildings and houses of Kolkata, the Kolkata of Bidya Didi and not Mamta Didi. The second thing that this movie reminded me is the Hindi novels penned by Ved Prakash Sharma during the eighties. Ved Prakash Sharma, a Hindi mystery-writer from Meerut has been termed as the bestselling Hindi pulp-fiction writer of the eighties and the nineties.
Sharma did not write pure whodunits. He used to write stories with a social tinge but containing a suspense element which passed current or shock waves through the minds of the readers at places and always contained a sting in the tail, rendering a big jolt to the reader in the climax. The script-writer of Kahaani if it's an original idea has done exactly that. It's a tale with a sting in the tail, leaving the spectator in shock and awe.
Cinema is the fine art of telling a story on the silver screen in an interesting manner. A few decades back, the grandmas and grannies of small children used to tell them stories at night and helped them in getting asleep. However the storyteller in cinema has to do exactly the reverse. If the spectator remains engrossed as well as attentive to the story being told throughout the duration of the movie, the narrator can consider himself as successful in his mission.
And Sujoy Ghosh has passed this litmus test of being called a good storyteller with distinction in Kahaani. It entertains, arouses and enhances curiosity with the advancing of the storyline, impresses with a high degree of realism, cuts all the crap and focuses on the main track only and ensures that everything told or shown has a link or relevance in the movie with nothing superfluous. The only thing that defies logic in my opinion is the incident of the contract-killer's not thrusting Vidya on the metro rail track and drawing her back instantly.
When the contract-killer and the person hiring him had to ultimately get rid of her, then there was no reason to pass only a threatening and leaving her alive. I am not revealing the story here and I am very much annoyed to see that a couple of reviewers have revealed the suspense through spoilers in their reviews of this movie, thus diluting the pleasure of the prospective goers of the movie. I feel, there is no need to reveal the story or the plot here and it's better that the story is revealed to the moviegoers on layer-by-layer basis on the screen itself.
