Way in the beginning is 1X on the Verizon network, for example. It's usually good only for a very short text SMS. The Verizon 1X network is eventually going away as they've indicated. Really the only solution is to move to an area with better coverage. Once a new network is built and people move to them - like almost all have moved to LTE, they start shutting down the old network.
