Which terry pratchett should i read first
Please see our disclosure policy for more details. The stories take place on a flat planet, carried by four elephants, who are standing on the back of a turtle, floating through space.
Which one you choose will depend on how many you want to read, how fast you read, and your own personal preferences. Many, if not most people, like to approach these books in the order they were written.
Most of the books in the series also form part of a subseries or collection that share the same theme or character arc. There are eight books in The City Watch Collection, which are best read in the flowing order:. The Witches collection stars the infamous Witches of Lancre, who practice their craft in the sleepy town in the rural Ramtop Mountains.
This collection is home to one of the best-loved characters in the whole of Discworld; Granny Weatherwax. This turtle floats along in space, and its inhabitants work to make their worlds better or live their lives. Kings die, the policemen watch the streets, and sometimes Death has to step in when the Auditors want to wipe out life.
There is the traditional Discworld reading order, which is listed here , which is the order Terry wrote them up until his death. Instead, I read them out of order, depending on what was at the library and know there is more than one Discworld reading order, depending on your preferences. The books always start with this perpetually unlucky wizard. Rincewind, who hates adventure but always gets drawn into it, appears in the following books:.
When cornered, Rincewind proves to be dangerous. Death, remarkably enough, stole the show more than a few times. The Munrungs believe that in the beginning, there was nothing but endless flatness.
The world Outside is completely foreign to them. But the nomes soon discover the truth about the world beyond the Department Store when they learn it is to be torn down. And so, their magnificent journey into the BIG, bad world of human beings — as well as a few small hurdles like dragons, geese, planes, and walking sandwiches — begins.
All the nomes want is to go home. That is until he finds Daphne, the daughter of a colonial Governor and shipwreck survivor. Initial introductions over, Mau and Daphne realise they have to work together to form a new civilisation.
Albeit a slightly odd one that includes milking pigs, chewing meat for old ladies with no teeth and spitting into beer. But their new adventure takes a turn when other survivors arrive on the island….
Dodger is a tosher; a scavenger of the sewers. And just like that, dark plans and even darker deeds begin. From encounters with the murderous barber Sweeney Todd to an unlikely friendship with Charles Dickens aka Mister Charlie, Dodger has to use every ounce of his quick wit and street smarts to save the day in this tale of the unlikeliest of heroes.
Only You Can Save Mankind Join Johnny Maxwell, an ordinary boy with extraordinary abilities, on his journey through adolescence in this fantastically funny trilogy. Consider these next two recommendations as your travel guides to Discworld…. Or, he did. With this new kind of rat on the block and a stupid-looking kid playing the flute in his sites, this con-cat plots the perfect money-making plan — well, at least until he brings his con to the rundown town of Bad Blintz.
A brilliantly bonkers adaptation of the German fairy tale about the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Always expect the unusual on Discworld…. Another character gem from his Discworld series is Tiffany Aching, a young witch in training.
Across these five book s, readers will watch Tiffany grow up and live every inch of her magical world alongside her. Dragons at Crumbling Castle Terry wrote: "As for a favorite, I'm fond of the first Oh no! I'm taking a "wait and see" attitude towards Raising Steam;. Sep 21, AM. I started my Discworld obsession with "The Truth" then went out and found all the other books in the series.
I like the Watch novels the best, followed by the Witches novels. Sep 22, AM. The Truth was the first book in the series that I read and I loved it.
It got me hooked. If I had to choose one to start with? Either Small Gods or Soul Music. Sep 24, AM. Don't wait to read it. Grimnir gives you a great list above. You definitely want to read the Witch novels in order. Sep 29, AM. I'd actually recommend starting with Troll Bridge. It's nice and short and it does a really good job of introducing you to the weird serious-turned-silly humour that's Pratchet's trademark. Sep 29, PM. I read the books in publication order, but only because I read the first book, The colour of magic the year it came out in I was 15 I wasn't a massive fan of the book at the time but parts of it made me laugh out loud.
So I stuck with the author and had all the books on order before they were released, and I became a massive fan eagerly awaiting each new book with marked impatience. Except the short stories, I don't read short stories never have, and I haven't tried the science of the discworld series either. Years later I re-read colour of magic and adore it. I couldn't understand why I didn't love it so much the first time I read it.
I've found a deeper appreciation of the discworld series and individual books on a second, third and fourth readings I've lost count of how often I've re-read guards guards and The Amazing Maurice.
